Natasha's Law - Made Easy

Natasha’s Law – Made Easy.

Your business has most likely seen a decline since the pandemic. The struggle has been real!

So, now that things are looking better and your business is starting to get back on its feet, you may have to catch up on complying with your products to meet Natasha’s Law.

"You are not alone!"

Many businesses in the food industry sector are in the same boat, have the same struggles with a time restriction, budget, and of course resources and materials to fully comply. (That’s where we come in!).

As handwritten labels are now strongly advised against due to significant human error and lack of trust by your consumer, it is suggested that an automated label option is now the preferable choice industry-wide!

So, what is Natasha’s Law?

If you haven’t heard of it yet and you’re in the food industry sector… You have a big problem on your hands! (Don’t worry, we can help you fix this!).

Natasha’s law came in on October 1st 2021, the food industry had a 2-year prior warning with things they needed to get done before the law came into force. (For the full legislation you can head to the Gov website.)

In short, PPDS (Prepacked for Direct Sale) foods made and sold onsite or distributed, must clearly display the following information on the packaging:

  • Name of the food.
  • Full ingredients list, with allergenic ingredients emphasised (for example; in bold, italics, or a different colour).

There are other legislations and regulations that tie into Natasha’s Law, such as the ‘may contain’ claims or other nutritional claims. These must state whether an allergen is present or if the food is not for consumption for those with certain allergies.

It is important to check through all the information surrounding these laws and regulations before putting your products to market for consumption. Failure in fully compliant products can result in fines, lawsuits, a possible prison sentence for your business, and of course reaction or death of a consumer because of your negligence.

So, how can we help you?

The first thing to remember is what you need to do to comply fully:

  • Do you provide allergen bolding on your product labels?
  • Do you know how to set out all the information on your labels to comply?
  • Have you provided QUID information?
  • Does your menu state anything about allergens online or in-store to help your customers?
  • Do you have serving/ portion size information displayed?
  • Is the ingredients list in full?
  • Is your nutritional information, correct?
  • Do you make and give food away for free?
  • Are you a Charitable organisation that gives away food?

"Yes even if you make and give away food for free, Natasha's law still applies to your business!"

If you are unsure of any of those questions, then it is most likely your labels are not fully compliant.

Our software includes many of these time-consuming issues as an all-in-one solution including a label designer so you can print in-house and on-demand as and when you need to without huge wastage or costs.

"We provide help where you need us with our technical software support for Tolarus easing your stress and worries ‘should you have any!’."

Our software enables the use of importing databases such as ‘saffron’ importing ingredients straight into the software for you to quickly make up products and labels that comply.

There is also the function to add your own ingredients and create your own database within the software but you must ensure you input the QUID grams etc. Correctly to ensure you are giving out the correct information. Therefore, if you are a smaller business without an original database to import, you can input the ingredients you use matching up the information you have already and saving it so that the process can be saved and labels produced quickly saving time.

Using these functions will enable you to bring new products to market that comply fully very quickly, as well as printing labels when you need them. Should an ingredient change, the database will be there for you to make the quick and easy change within Tolarus to comply without extra costs and wastage, so you can trial new designs and products without the faff!

Interested in what we can do for you?

Send us an email or give us a call and we will send you out a sample pack of what your products could look like using our software. (Fabulous!).

  • If you don’t have the ability to print within your business, we can fix that too, we have a range of deals and printers, graphics designers, and bureau services to print your designs at Tolarus and send your bespoke compliant labels straight to your business in the quantity you should need! (Stress-Free! We Told You So!)

So, how do I show my customers what my business is made of and still comply?

Easy peasy!

Consumers love transparency and brand values that align with their own ethical views! (Think for example environmental/ plant-based etc.) Consumers are now more educated and knowledgeable when deciding the best choice in healthier product for them, How does yours compare?

With the recent efforts to reduce plastic and increase sustainability, consumers are looking for brands that have made an effort to reduce their plastic or use alternative eco-friendly methods for their product packaging and labelling. Tolarus uses Inkjet labelling that is eco-friendly and reduces waste in materials. Combined with Epson colorwork printers for example and you have made a 'greener' impact for your business as materials and inks are less likely to run out as fast as others and won't need replacing as often.

With the recent influx and progressing market for 'Bespoke' labelling, you can now promote and tell your story to your customers through eye-catching branding design with labelling and packaging.

Keep it clear and concise and follow trends, you can use 'QR' codes to give your customers extra information about the product or brand or any promotion you might want to tell them. Not only that but it also lets them know that the product they are buying is authentically from you and your brand and not a "copycat".

Standing out among your competitors, but holding onto your reputation and aligning with your target market's ethics will be a winning factor among shelf choice and your products!

"Of course, you must remember to fully comply and make sure your product is true to any claims made on the packaging or labelling."

Keep up to date with the latest news regarding laws and regulations to make sure you are always aware of any changes and can implement them accordingly.
